<title>Limited Connectivity with Time Warner and Windows Vista.</title>
  <link>http://www.phoenixcomputercompany.com/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=10</link>
  <description>The Problem:

Many Time Warner Cable customers (as well as others) are experiencing problems obtaining an IP address from Time Warner Cable routers (as well as other routers) while using Windows Vista. Typically the issue is that Windows Vista is unable to get an IP address which results in limited connectivity or no internet access, just local access.

Initially this error looks like a network adapter problem but this is not always the case in the Vista/Time Warner Cable scenario.

The Reason:

The reason this error occurs is because unlike XP, Windows Vista forces the use of the DHCP Broadcast Flag. Windows 7 uses a toggle switch to check for the feature and will disregard if it is not present. When a device does not support this feature as many of the Time Warner Cable routers (as well as others) don&#039;t the result is the inability to get an IP address and subsequently outside internet access. It is not clear whether a recent ISP system update or Windows Vista update is the cause for the recent issue for Time Warner Cable customers but in either case the fix is outlined below.

The Solution:

To solve this problem you have to make Vista compatable with the Time Warner (or other) equipment by disabling the DHCP Forced Broadcast Flag for your networking devices. (you really only need to do it to the one you use to connect to the Time Warner (or other) router but doing them all is the simplest approach.

To do this you will need to edit the registy. You will have to go to Start then type in the search box regedit and you will see in the results regedit as a program. Run it to access the registry editor. (you must be logged in as an administrator)

In the left pane of the Registry Editor find the following registry subkey to see your network adapter settings:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\

You should see one or more folders or (GUID) subkeys here. As you highlight them you will see the contents of each folder on the right pane of the Registry Editor. Some folders or subkeys may have nothing in the right pane other than the word default, skip these for the ones that actually have settings established.

For each adapter find the following key in the right pane of the Registry Editor:

DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag

Right click this key and select modify. You will notice the value is set to (1) which is on. Change the value to (0) which is off and will disable the feature. Do this for all adapters under interfaces and on all of your Windows Vista computers.

Close the registry editor, reboot the computer(s) (to reload the registry). Once the computer is up it will likely still have limited connectivity so you will also need to reboot the Time Warner Cable (or other) router. Give it a minute to fully cycle (boot) and you should be back on line.

If this fix works for you please comment on this article.
If it does not work for you, you are having another issue and I would suggest bringing it in for a free diagnostic if you are local.

  <title>Upcomming E-mail issue for DSL subscribers !</title>
  <link>http://www.phoenixcomputercompany.com/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=5</link>
  <description>Attention DSL subscribers:

If you have DSL provided by Farmers Telephone, you may experience problems sending mail in Outlook, Outlook Express, or another mail program.

Farmers Telephone has made changes to its network filtering that will affect some people&#039;s ability to send e-mail. This change will affect you if the following are true:

1. You get your mail or some of your mail from an address that does not end in @ftc-i.net
2. Your other mail server uses the default port for sending mail.
(If you notice that you have trouble sending mail, and this problem started approximately sometime in February/March 2008; then, this will probably also be the problem)

The Problem:
Farmers is making changes to their network which will bar anyone from sending SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, ... or outgoing e-mail) information on port 25 outside of the FTC-I network. Any attempts to send mail on this port using any mail server other than Farmers Telephone&#039;s will be blocked out.

The Reason:
Farmers Telephone is implementing this measure to try and reduce the amount of e-mail SPAM that is sent through the FTC-I network. They can thus lower the amount of SPAM, and ensure that more speed is available to the average legitimate Farmers&#039; interent surfer.

The Solution:
Since you will only have this problem if you are sending e-mail using an outside Host (if one of your e-mail addresses ends in something other than ftc-i.net,) you will have to find out from that host (the place that you got that other e-mail address from) What other port you can use to send mail through their service. Most e-mail host provider companies have a website or phone number that will allow you to find out this information.

Once you have an alternative port number, you will need to change your e-mail program settings to use this new port number.

In Outlook and Outlook Express, you change this port number by going to Tools in the menu, and choosing E-mail Accounts or Account Settings. You then go to the properties of the account which goes through a company besides Farmers Telephone. In the account properties, you will find an Advanced Settings section or tab. There you will want to change the number of the outgoing server (SMTP) to the number that your e-mail host company told you that you could change it to. (before you change it, it will probably be the box that has the number 25 in it.)

Some other e-mail programs may have this setting in another place, but all of them should have a way to change this setting.</description>
